I left for Kansas a little early before my ten year high school reunion to visit family - and to meet new ones - like the Hallers!. I met Sonya and Brian and their two children, Brock and Riley at the park for family portraits. We met early in the morning before it got too hot and humid! The humidity in Kansas this time of year is about 100%, so things can get a a little sticky. Enjoying their time off of school, the Haller's are spending their summer days fishing, playing golf, and trying to stay cool, hanging out at home watching movies and playing games.

University of New Mexico: Roxy + Chris

A couple of weeks ago, I had the opportunity to second shoot for D. Lynch Photography, where we photographed the wedding of Roxy and Chris. Roxy and Chris met in high school, but are now college students at University of New Mexico and were married in the Alumni Chapel. They celebrated their marriage with family and friends at the infamous El Pinto.

After the intimate reception, we headed downtown where we were able to take some relaxing portraits of Roxy and Chris as husband and wife. Roxy was up for anything, allowing us to get some awesome bridal shots. I love it when couples make time for something a little different! It was well worth it!

"A trip that usually takes us two hours, took us five hours because of the terrible storm. Only two miles from my mom's house, Sam pulled into a parking lot and said, "I can't take this anymore." "We're only two miles away. What are you talking about?" It was then he reached into the back seat, I turned my head to realize Sam had the ring in his hand. It was then he asked for my hand in marriage - Christmas Eve in a crazy snow storm."

Amanda and Sam have known each other for four years and in less than four months they will be tying the knot in Kansas City; the same place they first fell in love and will soon become one.

Rio Grande Botanical Gardens: Becky + Dustin

Last weekend, I had the opportunity to second shoot for D. Lynch Photography, where we photographed the wedding of Becky and Dustin. There are many advantages to hiring a second photographer. The obvious reason for doing so, is that you will have two perspectives throughout the ceremony and reception. While one photographer is capturing the groom's expression as he sees his bride for the very first time, the other is photographing the beaming bride as she is being escorted down the aisle by her proud father. It is not only great to have two angles and viewpoints, but while one photographer is photographing you and the girls getting ready, the second photographer gets to hang with the guys. At the end of the day you have the entire wedding story captured from beginning to end and you have details, memories and precious moments you never saw. While one photographer can get the job done well, they cannot be everywhere at once!

After shooting Dustin prepping for his big day, I took the guys to the Albuquerque Academy where we were able to get some nice headshots and portraits of the groom and his best men. Yes, Dustin had three best men and they were all his closest friends! We also grabbed a few urban shots in Nob Hill on our way downtown.

Becky and Dustin's closest friends witnessed them tie the knot at the Rio Grande Botanical Gardens - A beautiful place for a wedding. The only thing missing was more time. As the sun began to set, the gardens turned into a photographer's playground, where the light was magical and every where you turn is a photograph waiting to be made. With their guests waiting to party, we were only able to take a quick stroll through the park, but we were able to turn out some favorites that will soon hang on the walls of their home: A reminder of their love and commitment to each other and a memory of their first day as husband and wife.

Becky and Dustin are an awesome couple. They welcomed each guest with love and appreciation and made me feel like part of their crew. I wish you two the best. May your marriage and the road ahead be blessed and full of wonderful memories.

Top Three things that make 2010 a NEW Year!

Numero Uno: I am a NEWlywed! After Drew proposed to me on Battleship Rock the first weekend of August, we tied the knot early in November. Photographed by the talented Randy Kepple, we had a beautiful, intimate wedding on a lovely Monday afternoon, in my hometown Fort Scott, Kansas. We said, "I do" at the Historic Lyon's Mansion and honeymooned in Ocho Rios, Jamaica.

Numero Dos: I am a NEW Mexican! Well, almost. It will be official next week after I get my new driver's license. Yes, Ezekiel and I packed our bags into a U-haul and moved from the cloudy Northwest to the sunny Southwest. Although we miss Portland's tall trees, urban landscapes, and amazing cappuccinos, we are now enjoying red and green chile, beautiful desert sunsets and a lot less rain.

Numero Tres: I am a NEW business! To celebrate a new beginning here in Albuquerque, we are not only offering new and exciting products for 2010, but at new lower prices. We love our NW clients and would like to thank you for your faithfulness and support - we hope to continue serving you over the years. We are still traveling and shooting worldwide, but everyone knows moving to a new city is kind of like starting over. We are excited for change and to meet new clients and friends! After much prayer and consideration, we've decided to relocate our studio at the end of July to New Mexico. We would like to confirm that we are committed to taking excellent care of all our Pacific Northwest clients. We love our Portland clients and have been blessed tremendously. We will continue serving the Northwest and will always look forward to shooting where the people are diverse, the coffee is good and everything is green:) We are sacrificing green for brown and replacing rain with sun. The landscape may change, but our vision remains. We are committed to loving people, cultivating change, making art, inspiring hope and encouraging dreams. We are very excited for what God is doing in our life and look forward to an awesome adventure.

Like always, custom art prints and books are available to order by phone or email and will be delivered by mail. We still have a few openings for 09 winter weddings and are now booking for 2010. When asked to photograph the senior class of Portland Bible College again this year, I was thrilled. Many of the students have sat in front of my lens once before - some as friends, several as bride and groom, and almost all at one time or another - as wedding guests. As a PBC grad, the campus is familiar territory, but the connections I made are covenant. These are the faces that have spent countless hours in prayer and are full of power, purpose, and hope. Look closely, because what you see here is a vehicle for change.

Morgan and Bryan

It all dates back to High School Chemistry. Sharing the same lab group, Bryan took the first opportunity he found to capture her attention. When Morgan complained of her hands being cold, in .02 seconds he was right there to warm them up - and he still is. Whether this came as surprise or it was all a surmise, Morgan and Bryan have what it takes. Their chemistry has only grown stronger. They will be tying the knot this July in watermelon country, the small town of Hermiston, Oregon.

Last week I traveled back to my hometown of Fort Scott, Kansas for a few days to help a friend photograph her first wedding. Between shooting for local clients, cooking dinner for my parents, playing with my niece and nephews, helping out with the family business and visiting old friends, time seems to disappear. However, I did manage to sneak away and photograph my sister and her family. It was a little chilly, but you would never know from the warmth and love they share.

Here are a few of my favorites from our family session:

After prying off their little fingers one by one that are gripping my legs and holding on with all their might, I finally managed to slip away from my niece and nephew who have begged and bribed me to allow them to climb into my suitcase and fly back to Portland. About an hour on the road to Kansas City, I receive an email from my niece stating in a very serious tone that if I don't turn around and come back right now she will slap me:) Guess I have it coming upon my return!

The Holloways

Attending the same church camp, classes kindergarten through twelfth, Fifties Sock Hops and karaoke, Kelsey and I have many childhood memories we share. Her father, my optometrist, and her mom teaching with mine, it was inevitable we would become great friends. With Kelsey now living in Chicago and her younger brother Jared in Lawrence, it is not often the Holloway family is all together in one place. There is no better time to capture a family photo than over the holidays. You may not be able to tell from the images, but I could barely maneuver my camera my fingers were so frozen. The winter wind chill in Kansas is so bitterly cold. I think quite possibly this family session wins the award for the most frigid (and shortest) in KKP history. The Holloway family, however, were troopers and managed to smile:)

Deidre & Phil: Wedding

We began our day at the lovely Courtland Hotel where the girls got their hair and makeup done and the boys got suited up for Deidre and Phil's wedding day. After much preparation and a lot of planning, the day finally arrived! The boys hopped on "Dolly the Trolley" to the Lyon's Twin Mansions where Deidre and Phil would see each other for the very first time. After saying "I do" before hundreds of friends and family during a candelit ceremony at First Christian Church, the party resumed at Rosie's Cabin where the bride and groom hit the dance floor and guests enjoyed dinner, celebrating Deidre and Phil's new life together.

I first met Ashley not as a bride-to-be, but as a bridesmaid in Autumn and Kevin's wedding. I immediately noticed her amazing smile and knew right then that I wanted to photograph her. The opportunity arose as Rich had proposed and we had an early morning engagement session in Fort Scott, Kansas. As I expected, Rich is just as amazing. The lovely couple are saying "I do" this summer near Wichita.

While photographing Avani and Chander we had fun discovering new places and enjoying the little things - like how fruit grows on trees, how the trees bare their autumn leaves, and wondering whether the gray cloud formations lingering above us would soon deliver rain. Our session was short and sweet, but simply amazing. It was wonderful to watch Avani care for her little brother, but yet exert her own independence. It was inspiring to see from a child's point of view and realize that miracles do happen everyday. At some point in our life, they simply go unnoticed.

Suzy and Kyle: Wedding

Exactly four years from their very first date, Suzy and Kyle tied the knot in a small, outdoor ceremony with their closest friends and family overlooking Lake Washington. I knew from the very first moment I saw the entire bridal party sporting Chuck Taylor's, that we were in for a good time. The light was absolutely gorgeous and we couldn't have had a more perfect day.

The only time I have worked with Heather on a wedding was not as the photographer, but as her maid of honor. Heather and I met at Pittsburg State University where we both majored in art. Whether it was being frustrated at a drawing that we were never quite satisfied with, keeping each other company in the darkroom, being encouraged and inspired at our Kansas City First Fridays, pulling all nighters to finish our final projects, helping each other study for our art history exams, enjoying good food, or yes, even fighting over boys, Heather and I were pretty much inseparable. She has been behind the camera and in front of mine and a great friend throughout it all. What I love about Heather is that when she has an idea she always executes it. After marrying her high school sweetheart, Heather bought and renovated an old historic building in downtown Pittsburg where her storefront will soon open. She learned to bake and is now creating masterpieces that not only look good but taste good too! I can't wait to work with her on future events. Heather always has a way of making her dreams a reality and can do the same for her brides to be. This is how Sweet Designs Cakery came to be.

After finishing up my 08 post production, fulfilling holiday print orders, surviving the crazy arctic blast, traveling to Kansas and back, designing albums and dvds, shooting amazing winter weddings, last minute seniors, and wonderful families, I have been sitting here looking at my laundry list of things to do and somehow over these last few months blogging keeps being moved from the top of the list to the bottom. Having not blogged since the holidays began, I have decided to end the two month long silence with a little bit of inspiration, perspiration, and conversation. First of all, I want to say thank you to all my clients and supporters who made 2008 a successful and productive year. We have captured some amazing moments and created wonderful memories. Over these next few weeks I will be posting what we have done over these past few months as well as some new and exciting projects we are currently working on. I realize we are eighteen days into January, but I feel like the new year has just begun. I guess this year I am following the Chinese calendar. In that case, I have about one week to finish making those crazy New Year's Resolutions before the Chinese New Year.

Parker Alexander

Another year has passed since I last shot portraits of my nephew Parker. He has grown so much! Now in pre-school, Parker can not only write his name but he is proudly learning to read! Although he is a great student, Parker is a good ol' country boy. He is the classic kid who on any given day would much rather spend time outdoors. His love for mowing the lawn and John Deere tractors has only grown stronger. Funnier than ever, Parker knows how to captivate an audience (usually his mom and dad and sometimes his sister's friends) with his infectious smile and dry sense of humor. Nicknamed "Dennis the Menace," Parker relentlessly provokes his big sister by hiding her things and playing practical jokes. Although she may not always appreciate his comic relief, one bat of the eye and quick flash of the pearly whites can easily make one forget and forgive. His sweetness and sincerity will instantaneously melt one's heart.

After jumping in the pool wearing nothing but florescent pink swim trunks at his sister's wedding, I wasn't sure what to expect when asked to shoot Denver's senior pictures, but I knew it would be entertaining. It didn't take long to learn that beneath the hard shell of his atv helmet and deflector there lies a kind, gentle man - a guy who honestly knows how to have fun and who is willing to take risks. As a graduating senior at Fort Scott High School, I have no doubt Denver will exceed his dreams and expectations.

Paxton Lee

Born on May 20th at 9:12 am, a miracle happened. A child was born. Not just any child, but my nephew. Weighing in at 6 llbs and 10 oz., his little hands and feet were so tiny.

But look at him now! Now giggling, kicking, and pushing himself up, Paxton sure is growing! Putting on his serious face for the camera, Paxton's sweet demeanor and joyful spirit will soften one's heart and make anyone wish they could carry him home.

Miranda

Graduation is not the end - it is the beginning. It is a chance to do something remarkable. To make a difference. To be a voice. It is the freedom to begin touching dreams and making them a reality. It is the start of a new journey that will be filled with life lessons, responsibilities and character building, but will ultimately result in opportunity, success, and value. There is no destination. No arrival. It isn't the piece of paper or the job title that allows you to quit learning or quit striving. It is not a point but a line that has no ending. As you achieve your goals, experience milestones, and continue to grow, you will keep picking up the line and moving it a little further, adding another brick, building it a little bigger. As you do this you are broadening and expanding your dreams. Someone once said, "Out-dream, out-work, and out-love everybody." I believe this is the key to success.

Miranda, a senior at Rex Putnam High School is an incredibly powerful force that will not only climb a mountain but move them too.

Esther and Michael: Wedding

The day has arrived that Michael's bride is finally his. "Come the day your mine"...with soulful jazz music humming softly in the background, the romantic tunes set the mood for Esther and Michael's intimate wedding held on the private patio of the Leach Botanical Garden.

Elegant. Sophisticated. Authentic. Every aspect, every detail was just perfect for these gifted musicians. With gorgeous flowers designed by Tommy Luke, Esther's handcrafted details, the perfect blend of real Indonesian and soul foods, delectable cake, and the buzzing sounds of laughter, crying and reminiscing of long time friends and family -how could this day be any more perfect?

Ellie and Jason: Wedding

Fresh berries and big beautiful bouquets picked directly from the gardens of local Oregon farmers added a touch of country and a lot of summer to Ellie and Jason's wedding at City Bible Church. Ellie and Jason couldn't have been more happy to be getting married on this gorgeous hot summer day. Hundreds of their friends and family witnessed not only the exchanging of their vows and commitment to one another, but also their first kiss!

Different Flowers, Same Garden

An unknown author once wrote, "Sisters are different flowers from the same garden." Having a sister, I too can testify. We couldn't be more different or more alike. Shooting within their bedrooms, bathroom and the landscape of their home, Heather and Brittany may be two sisters who didn't always get along, but they share the same childhood memories. Sisters have a bond unlike any other relationship in that they are a forever friend. When no one else understands, a sister always will.

Josie and Franklim

It is the way they look at each other. It's like the universe has come to a halt and no one else is around. It is the way he makes her laugh and the way she holds him close. It is like they are cherishing the very presence of the one that has captured their heart. Josie and Franklim are on their way back home to Brazil. After spending some time in Portland they will miss the relationships - the people they connected with. They will miss the Portland bridges, the tall evergreens, the rainy skies in fall and the beautiful roses in summer, but one thing they will always have is the wonderful memories. Josie and Franklim are ready for a new journey (as long as it is together).

Natalie & Jeff

Alaina Lynn

Choosing her own backgrounds, voicing her opinions and sharing her ideas, Alaina wasn't afraid to strike a pose. Another year has passed since I last took pictures of Alaina Lynn. Turning seven has brought on new responsibilities, new interests and new challenges. A little taller, a little smarter, and a lot more vocal, this little girl is growing up before our eyes! Sitting tall and proud, Alaina exudes what every girl should - wisdom and confidence!

Yenny & Kennedy

After meeting online, (thanks to wonderful sites like eHarmony!) it didn't take long for Yenny and Kennedy to decide that they didn't want to lose connection. Yenny, from Jakarta, Indonesia and Kennedy, from Eugene, Oregon celebrated their love in a beautiful, intimate wedding along the McKenzie River. The sun peeked in and out of the storm clouds allowing for a quiet celebration with close friends and family. Things got a little bit louder at their public reception the next day as Kennedy serenaded Yenny and friends showered them speech after speech with kind words, exhortations and praise. It was so inspiring to witness how much their friends and family genuinely love and adore them. It is obvious these two truly are the perfect match!

Megumi and Charles: Wedding

Family traveled all the way from Japan and friends flew in from several states to witness the coming together of Megumi and Charles. From her hair and makeup, to the flowers and decor and even the wedding cake, Megumi involved her friends every step of the way. Her thoughtfulness and attention to detail was well rewarded. Surrounded by love and joy, Megumi and Charles had the wedding they always hoped for - relaxed, fun and beautiful - enjoying every moment of the day.

Congratulations Megumi and Charles! I am so grateful for our friendship. I can't wait to see how God blesses your marriage!

Back to School

School House Supplies does it again! Together with help from the community and local businesses, thousands of children's backpacks filled with the essential tools for school have been distributed again this year among Portland Public Schools.

This year I was invited along with Tripwire and Entrepreneurs Foundation of the Northwest to volunteer at King School.

Building a community of leaders, King School is a dynamic and ethnically diverse pre-kindergarten through eighth grade learning community located in the heart of NE Portland in the King Neighborhood. Built in 1929, King School has a long and rich history. They believe in making Dr. Martin Luther King Jr's dream a reality not only for our community, but for everyone.... to simply "be the best that we can be."

Someday

After having a puppy in my home for several weeks now, I have to admit it is life altering. My whole schedule has changed. I no longer have to set an alarm as Ezekiel wakes me up every morning between 6 and 7 a.m. Once in awhile he lets me go back to bed. I have also lost the freedom to be spontaneous because he is too young to leave at home for long periods of time. It has been both fun and challenging. He is a sweetheart in public and an angel when he sleeps. But when it comes to food you better leave him alone. I have bite marks to prove that nothing will get in his way. I guess we have a lot in common:) Despite his stubbornness, I still love him.

Yesterday, I was on the phone with my nephew Parker. Out of curiosity, he asked me what I was doing. I told him I was taking Ezekiel to the bathroom. Inquisitively, he asked, "Does he have a doggy toilet?" Later in conversation after asking Parker how preschool was going, I then told him that Ezekiel will be going to school (obedience) too. Parker preceded to ask, "Will a doggy teach him?" Oh, how I love the mind of a child. How amazing it must be to look at the world through their eyes.

It was then, I realized that I am not just training a puppy, but he is training me. To someday, take on the more difficult responsibility of raising a child.

Caitlin & George

What do you get when you combine a fierce soccer player with a high school physics teacher?

Mad Science?

No! An explosive couple like Caitlin and George. (This is why I do not tell jokes when I am behind the camera!)

Caitlin, a beautiful college student and insanely good soccer player and George, a lover of philosophy, people and physics, had their very first date at Vivace, a small coffee shop on Portland's NW 23rd. Vivace is Italian for "quick and lively" - two words that describe the synergy between this amazing couple. Vivace is famous for their coffee and crepes. But this is not what Caitlin and George know it for. Vivace happens to be the exact place where George later dropped to one knee and asked Caitlin to be his wife - making it the perfect place for us to begin our shoot.

Baby Connor

Just three days after I shot Aimee's maternity session, she gave birth to a beautiful baby boy, Connor. I am still in awe at the whole process of childbearing. How awesome it must feel to bring a precious life into this world. What an amazing gift from God - to give the sacred gift of life.

Awaiting Baby's Arrival

Taken just three days before delivery, Michael & Aimee were anxiously awaiting the arrival of their first baby. Not knowing whether it's a boy or a girl, Michael and Aimee were prepared for the baby that was about to change their lives indefinitely. What will never change is how much these two love each other. They are cherishing every last moment they have together before they assume the most difficult and most important role in the world...to be a parent.

A Place I Can Finally Call Home

I have arrived. I am now "one of them." I can finally call the Northwest home. After moving here from Kansas, it only took me one month to learn how to drive in a city. Two months to become an avid coffee drinker. Three months to accept that it is okay for guys to wear skinny jeans. Six months to become a lover of shoes (Yes, I finally broke down and bought the pointy shoes and now have a closet full of pumps). One year to chop off my unstyled, boring hair. A little over a year to accept that it is okay for guys to take longer to get ready than girls and that the fauxhawk is actually quite interesting. Three years to become obsessed with tofu. About the same to develop my love for red wine. My favorite foods are now Japanese & Thai. Three and a half years to finally begin decorating my place. I guess I can't always be ready to pack in under an hour and load my car to go back to Kansas. And now it has been exactly four years and I can finally claim the title "Portlander" (even though I live in Vancouver). It is the unconditional love I have for my new assistant, my companion, my best friend...my new mini weenie, Ezekiel.

Yes, I have become one of those crazy dog owners. I knew it was true when I had to resist the urge to pull out a photograph of Ezekiel whenever a proud parent shows me a picture of their child. When I got offended that I could not take my pet everywhere I go - who knew it was against the health code in restaurants and grocery stores? Why, I certainly can't leave my puppy home all alone:) But what really tipped me off is that my print order came in yesterday and I am still sitting here trying to decide who to mail these wallet sized pictures to - my mom and dad, my niece and nephews, my dogsitter... after all there are only eight!

Autumn & Kevin: Wedding

After much anticipation, Autumn and Kevin's wedding day finally arrived. After a few tears and a lot of rain, the stormy Kansas skies behaved long enough for a small town backyard to become for one day the perfect backdrop for Autumn and Kevin to say I do. Friends and family came to show their love and support and take part in making it one of the happiest days of their lives.
